Hey guys, I haven't posted about the Montego in far too long. There really hasn't been much to say though. I just bought a new house back in the fall so my funds were directed there and not towards the Montego Project.

Quick recap for those who don't know about my classic.

1968 Mercury Montego MX Cyclone Package. 302 V8, C4 Merc-O-Matic Auto Trans, Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake Manifold, Holley 4 Barrel, True Dual Super 44 Flowmaster Exhaust.

So I just ordered some parts for under the hood, should make a big difference under there, some functional, some just visual.

On order (should be here this week with free ground shipping, helps to live 1 state away from a Summit Racing distribution center) to put on this Spring - Ford Racing Valve Covers, Black Crinkle Ford Racing breather cap, Red Ford Racing Spark Plug wires, Black Ford Racing Wire holders, and a black Tuff Stuff Supercool Water Pump.

So yeah, there's some fun engine dress up stuff mixed in here. There's also some much needed functionality. The current valve covers are shot, they got warped and won't give me a good seal (I swear if I have one more guy at a car show tell me it drips some oil on to my manifold.....) and I always wanted these valve covers for it anyhow.

The Water Pump I think is going to help out the engine quite a bit, I have an overheating issue that pops up, i think it's probably the radiator, but this could use to be replaced anyhow.

After these this summer my only other plan is to try and get the small holes patched in the floor.

Gotta watch water pumps. I had one go bad on my Rover and cause an overheating problem due to the fact the blades were only spinning part of the time.

What did the Performer RPM intake manifold do for your performance? I'm thinking of getting one for the Cutlass, but I may just get long-tubes instead.

Glasspacks. The Montego needs glasspacks!

Glasspacks?! Hell no!

Listen to this, stock single exhaust first then flows at around 45 seconds:

After you've listened to this tell me if I need to change the mufflers lol

Well, the RPM is supposed to up the RPM a bit, better hp/torque.

It's hard to identify though because all 3 of those performance upgrades I called out happened at the same time. I had to do the motor stuff at once because I went from a 2 barrel carb (stock) to a 4 barrel. And I just had the exhaust done same time.

Well I've had overheating issues and the pump is original from 68, figured it wouldn't hurt to replace.

Must have ignition upgrade.

Yeah it's needed.

I need to figure out what all is required, I've never done an ignition upgrade before.

Basically my knowledge is - "call msg, everyone else does."

I mean I had the same philosophy for Flowmaster Exhaust, Edelbrock Intakes and Holley Carbs, so why not carry on the trend for ignition?

No sense in getting one for a 305.

The heads run out of steam before the intake.

I wouldn't waste the money on a big MSD kit. just get the standard ford electronic HEI stuff.

There is NO power in ignition. its a giant bunch of marketing hype. an MSD box only helps with spark accuracy, since your motor wont see much over 6k (if that) dont worry about it. I know plenty of guys going really fast on the factory HEI ignition from GM.

Good to know. What would you recommend?

find a 455 if you want to stay with a carb. Find an Ls1 drivetrain if you want to go FI. don't spend a cent on a 305 if it won't translate to a better motor.

What if you want to stick with a carb, but don't have money? Will a carbed manifold fit on an LT1?

Insurance is over $2k a year, and the only jobs I can find are $11 bucks an hour minimum wage. Between insurance, gas, and repairs, I don't have money. Go ahead and blame Stephen Harper.

Holy hell man 2k for insurance for a G-body?? Im not at that & I have full coverage on a diesel truck + limited on my Regal (well now I have an A-body Cutlass... but still!) AND im under 25 so I havent hit that reduced insurance rate

Pertronix is a good budget HEi distributor. I plan on using them when I change over my Cutlass to HEI. One other thing to remember when you change over is that the plug gap is different for Points vs HEI so you will possibly need new plugs (again) or gap these at the very least
